“This is radical because we’re saying there isn’t this narrow standard of what a beautiful body looks like.”
-Robert Best, senior director of Barbie Product Design
There is a struggle that exists among society. The ideal body standard has become ultra-thin, while society has become highly obesogenic. We are forced to make eating decisions constantly and are shamed when we do not respond appropriately. Shame can be a terrible thing.
Recently, Barbie’s designers have encouraged more self-acceptance among their audience with Barbie’s New Body. Barbie is now curvy, petite or tall.
Barbie can be healthy when she is curvy, petite, and tall.
There is a variety of body shapes and sizes. For your shape and size, be your healthiest. More positive thoughts about weight can sometimes create more positive thoughts about food. This makes eating decisions easier and pumps the brakes on any shame that may result from eating.
There is no longer a standard for beauty, for Barbie has said so.
